ISUZU 4WD CLUB GIBSON DESERT APRIL-MAY 2023

This trip is planned to go into the Gibson Desert (McPersons Pillar) via Newman

and the Talawana Track. The trip will exit the Gibson Desert via the David

Carnegie Road and into Laverton via the GCR and Anne Beadell Hwy.

The plan is to commence Sat20Apr and be back home Sun 31 May. These dates

and the route is subject to change for any reason which may include the weather

and anything else you can think of/dream of.

The trip involves an easy run along sealed and maintained Hwys and dirt roads

as well as desert tracks that will be overgrown (scratches) and rough…including

many washouts and corrugations. If you are intending on towing, then

whatever you are going to tow should not be any higher/wider than your 4wd.

You tow at your own risk.

The weather will play a major part in the road/track conditions.

There will be limited opportunities to shop for food etc after Newman

(Woolworths/IGA) so you need to be as fully self-sufficient as possible for the

duration of the trip. Make sure you have plenty of water as potable water

sources will be limited. If you intend to purchase alcohol, be aware that there

are some strange rules regarding what you can purchase and weird opening hours.

You will need a fuel range of at least 1600 km. Fuel available at Wubin, Mt

Magnet, Meekatharra, Kumarina, Newman, Parnguur, Tjukayirla R/house,

Laverton, Leonora, and Coolgardie…then along the GEH. Please be aware that

some places require cash and others a credit card to operate the pump.

Recovery equipment is suitable for sandy/mud track travel to be carried as well

as Maxtrax (or similar) + a long handle shovel. Puncture repair kit to be

carried.

There should be 1 x UHF handset available for each person in the

vehicle as there will be a lot of opportunities to go walking during this trip and in

this type of country, it is easy to get misplaced. Each vehicle will require a

spinifex “blind” and a length of wire suitable for removing spinifex from around

your 4WD exhaust, tail shaft, and other places.

Food…I will have a BBQ plate for…BBQs. We will have a couple of nights in the

same place during this trip so if you wish to do the camp oven thing you are

welcome to do so. If possible, please bring a bag of wood to share out for the

first couple of nights.

Clothing…whatever you want but try and be fashionable. There will also be the

opportunity for walking and exploring so please make sure you have decent

shoes (boots are better) and appropriate clothing.

It would be wise to have at least one piece of HiViz clothing to put over

whatever you will be wearing…makes it easier for the helicopter to spot you.

NOTE…there is nowhere to wash clothes between leaving home (Sat29Apr)

and arriving in Leonora CP (around day 19…hopefully).

Weather…If we are lucky there will have been minimal desert rain over the

summer and the place will either be burnt out or dry. If it’s like 2020 and 2021

with plenty of rainfall, then expect very overgrown tracks.

For this trip expect warm, cool, cold, freezing (really freezing), cloudy, sunny,

windy, calm, dry, and wet…if it continues to rain and floods then all bets are off

and we will likely be exiting by the quickest route.

There’s a better-than-even chance that the nights will be freezing so make sure

you have warm and cozy sleeping stuff…and that’s really freezing so do not

skimp on the warm sleeping stuff.

Your 4wd will require a sand flag and a fire extinguisher...and a good idea to

always have a pair of welding gloves in your 4wd anyway.

Timings…the aim will be to have camp set up and enjoy a beer (or

whatever) at least 90mins before sunset. That’s the aim. There will be a

couple of days where some reasonable distances will need to be traveled and

a couple of nights in the same place. Solars, nuclear fusion, angels’ tears,

unicorn farts, or whatever you need to keep your batteries topped up when not

moving will be required.

One thing that may be a factor in packing up our camp each morning is how

wet everything will get from the dew and condensation (and ice) …it may take

a while to dry.

Meet at Wubin Sat 29 April for a 1400wst departure.

Please SMS if you think you need further info.

There will be a requirement for permits but that will be advised closer to the

departure date.
